We love to celebrate holidays, and St. Patrick's Day is no exception! We have the best St. Patrick's day sensory activities for kids - a St. Patty's sensory table and a Fluffy Leprechaun Slime!
st patty's day sensory table
Filler: This year we used a simple green chickpea filler. You could also use split peas if you wanted to skip the next step!
what you'll need:
12 cups of dried chickpeas (available at any grocery store or Target)
white vinegar
food coloring
ziplock bags
wax paper
sheet pans or baking dishes
instructions:
We used four 16oz bags of dried chickpeas. Your amount can be different based on the size of your table.
One bag at a time, transfer a bag of chickpeas into a gallon ziplock and add 10 drops of green food coloring and 1 tablespoon of vinegar.
Zip the bag tight and shake up the mixture!
Line a baking sheet or baking dish with wax paper. Place the dyed chickpea mixture on top of the wax.
Repeat for each bag of chickpeas (and you can consolidate two bags of chickpeas onto one baking sheet - meaning you just need two lined baking sheets in total).
Once you dyed all the chickpeas, lay them out to dry on the baking sheets. You can do this outside on a sunny day for a few hours or inside over night.
Accessories: Let your creativity shine here! We used the following items -
Wooden Tools (Scoop, Bowls): Amazon
Large Glitter Clovers: Target Dollar Section
Clover Tin Bucket: Target Dollar Section
Glittery Small Clovers: Hobby Lobby
Lucky Signs + Accessories: Target Dollar Section
Wooden Peg People: We got ours in a kit from Casita Curated Play, but you can also find them separately on Amazon.
And there you have an easy St. Patrick's Day table! :)
fluffy leprechaun slime
Next up, a cool twist on slime. It's slime with shaving cream - making it a weird fluffy consistency but with similar properties of slime.
Now, I have to say, we kind of hate slime in our house (due to its destructive nature)... except that Molly LOVES it. So We make an exception once in a while if we can keep it contained to the counter (and then to live in a plastic bag after that).
Also - there are lots of ways to make slime. This is the very simplest. It's not the cheapest, but it's easy and worth it to us when we're doing less of a science experiment and more of a sensory activity. You can buy everything you need in a Target pick up order.
what you’ll need:
1 bottle of Elmer's school glue
Elmer's slime starter
green food coloring
gold glitter
shaving cream (like the old school canned shaving cream)
instructions:
Add the full bottle of glue to a bowl.
Add the food coloring - drop by drop to get your intended color.
Add the gold glitter (optional but fun).
Follow directions on the bottle to add in the slime starter. Note that you'll likely need to keep adding and adding a tablespoon at a time... don't be shy!
Add in several squirts of shaving cream - keep adding more until you're happy with the fluffy mixture!
And that is a wrap on our St. Patrick's Day sensory activities!
