For Valentines, why not make some easy air dry clay crafts with your big kids! We have a few ideas for inspiration - jewelry dishes, necklaces, and chopstick holder! And they they are just cute enough that someone may actually want to keep them - for more than sentimental reasons!
1. jewelry dishes
what you'll need:
air dry clay
heart cookie cutters
paint + brushes
instructions:
❤️ roll out your air dry clay (hint: a quarter inch is the best thickness to avoid cracking and also dry in a reasonable amount of time)!
❤️ use a heart cookie cutter to cut out the shape of a heart
❤️ slightly roll up the edges of the heart to form a shallow bowl
❤️ wait for it to dry complete and then paint it!
2. heart necklaces
what you'll need:
ribbon
air dry clay
heart cookie cutters
kabob stick (or screwdriver or similar tool for making a small hole)
paint + brushes
instructions:
❤️ roll out your air dry clay (hint: a little under a quarter inch is the best thickness to avoid cracking and also dry in a reasonable amount of time)!
❤️ use a heart cookie cutter to cut out the shape of a heart (note: our hears were about 2 inches each, but you could do a series of smaller hearts if you're using thin ribbon)
❤️ use a kabob stick (or a screwdriver or other kitchen tool) to make a small hole at the top of the heart - this is where you'll thread the ribbon through after it dries (hint: don't get too close to the edge, as it may crack when you're threading the ribbon if the remaining piece is too thin)
❤️ wait for it to dry complete and then paint it (hint: don't forget to paint the sides and the back!)
❤️ once the paint is dry, thread your ribbon and tie it off - ta da!
3. chopstick holders
what you'll need:
air dry clay
water bottle straw
paint + brushes (coolest glitter paint from target here)
instructions:
❤️ roll out your air dry clay into a small ball. use your hands to slightly flatten it and push the side of the straw into the top of the ball to begin forming the two rounded edges of the heart
❤️ continue to shape it into a fat heart. once you're happy with the fat heart, press it down on a flat surface so the back is flat.
❤️ lay a water bottle straw (yes, like a stanley straw or similar :)) vertically down the middle and press gently - this imprint is where the chopsticks will rest
❤️ wait for it to dry complete and then paint it (hint: don't forget to paint the sides and the back!)
Next up, we'll share another craft to round out the rest of your custom sushi set!
