valentines: homemade rose playdough

Writer's picture: thechaoscuratedthechaoscurated

We did a seasonal Valentine's twist on our favorite playdough recipe - roses! We made a pink dough with rose scent and real rose petals plus glitter for some extra flair! And the best thing about this is you can even package it up to take on the go or gift to friends!

valentine (rose) playdough

This is our go to easy play dough recipe for playdough, and we've done a million variations.

what you'll need:

- 2 cups all-purpose flour

- 3/4 cup salt

- 4 teaspoons cream of tartar

- 2 cups lukewarm water

- 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil

- food coloring, glitter, beads... or any other items you'd like to mix in once the dough is finished

- ziplock bags (quart or gallon work best!)

directions:

  1. Put the flour, salt, cream of tartar, water, and vegetable oil into a pot and mix.

  2. Cook the ingredients over medium heat until the consistency thickens - make sure to stir the ingredients the entire time!

  3. Once the mix is thick, remove it from the pot and place it on a cutting board to cool.

  4. After it cools, separate it into various ziplock bags (depending how many variations you'd like to make).

  5. Now you're ready to add the food grade scent oils, food coloring, and mix-ins! (Note: For food coloring, add just a couple drops at a time until you get the color you're looking for. And make sure to fully mix it in before removing from the bag, as it won't stain your hands once it's fully mixed in!)

  6. And finally, the bottom of your pot will have some residue, just don't forget to soak the pot and it will come right out.

To make it a Valentine's playdough, we added:

- 12 drops of pink food coloring

- rose petals (from Amazon)

- food grade rose extract (from Amazon)

- rose gold edible glitter (from Amazon)

We also packed a few of these up to gift to friends! (We used these containers from Amazon plus a sticker from Papersource.) They're great gifts since they inspire play, are beautiful, and are even totally food-grade and taste-safe.

Enjoy!
